Saltscape is a distinctive landscape, transformed from historic salt production into a wildlife haven and rich in unique heritage highlights. This seven and a half mile flat walk meanders beside the River Weaver and The Trent and Mersey canal.
Get yourself onto the M56 heading in the direction of Chester.
Exit at junction 10, signed A559 Northwich. At the end of the motorway slip road there is a roundabout, take the first exit, A559 & brown sign for Marbury Country Park. It is five miles from this point until our destination car park.
Continue along the A559 road, passing Hollies Farm shop on the right.
After 3 miles take the right turn onto Gibb Hill. ‘Sevenoaks saw mill’ is at this junction.
As you pass (the wonderfully named) ‘Spinner & Bergamot Inn’ on the right, Gibb Hill becomes Warrington Rd. As this road bends left it becomes Marbury Rd.
Pass Marbury Hall Nurseries on the left. Take care on this winding stretch of road. Look out for ‘The Moorings’ on the left. Shortly afterwards, at the sign for Anderton Boat Lift, turn left, over a small bridge, bear right and follow the sign for car park.
If you arrive early you have free entry into the visitor centre to access the toilets, cafeteria, gift shop and a birds eye view of the engineering masterpiece.
You may wish to bring binoculars to spot a sandmartin…….. and a parrot!
